How Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw’s Romance Rocked 1970s Hollywood

In the early 1970s, few couples embodied Hollywood glamour quite like Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw. One iconic photograph taken on the set of Papillon in Jamaica captured them basking in the sun — stylish, magnetic, and seemingly inseparable. At the time, it looked like a simple snapshot of two stars enjoying life. In hindsight, it symbolized the beginning of one of Hollywood’s most talked-about love stories.

Interestingly, MacGraw wasn’t part of Papillon at all. She was visiting the set after recently meeting McQueen — and the chemistry between them was instant.

At the time, MacGraw was riding the wave of Love Story (1970), a global hit that made her one of the most recognizable actresses in the world. McQueen, already known as the “King of Cool,” was at the height of his fame, celebrated for his rebellious charm and understated intensity on screen.

Their relationship truly ignited during the filming of The Getaway (1972), where they played lovers. McQueen personally approached MacGraw about starring opposite him, and their connection quickly grew beyond the script.

MacGraw later admitted she was captivated from the start, recalling how deeply she was affected when she first looked into his eyes.

But their romance came with consequences.

At the time, MacGraw was married to powerful Paramount executive Robert Evans. When she chose to leave that marriage and be with McQueen, it sparked widespread media attention. In the more conservative Hollywood climate of the 1970s, the affair became major headline news.

Despite the controversy, McQueen and MacGraw married in 1973 in a small, intimate ceremony beneath a cottonwood tree in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The guest list was minimal — just their children and a judge who reportedly left a golf game to officiate the wedding.

Together, they became the ultimate 1970s power couple. Their rugged-meets-glamorous style defined an era: leather jackets, denim, oversized sunglasses, and an effortless cool that photographers couldn’t resist. Every public appearance fueled fascination with their passionate romance.

However, behind the glamorous images, tensions were building.

McQueen’s strong personality and traditional expectations reportedly clashed with MacGraw’s independence and career ambitions. She later shared that he preferred her at home rather than pursuing professional opportunities. For a time, she stepped back from acting, but the arrangement proved difficult to sustain.

By 1978, their marriage had ended.

Looking back at that famous Jamaica photo from the Papillon set, it feels layered with meaning. What once appeared to be a carefree Hollywood moment now hints at something more complex — attraction, intensity, and the fragile beginnings of a love story that would ultimately struggle under pressure.

Meanwhile, Papillon itself sparked controversy. Though many praised McQueen’s performance, he did not receive an Academy Award nomination in 1974. Some speculated industry politics played a role, while others suggested factors such as casting debates or Hollywood gossip may have influenced the outcome.

Regardless of the rumors, McQueen’s performance remains one of the most frequently discussed Oscar “snubs” of the decade.

The romance between Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw remains one of classic Hollywood’s most fascinating chapters — a story of passion, glamour, ambition, and the complicated realities behind the spotlight.
